Los Angeles Controller Laura Chick has canceled an $85,000 consulting contract with former Deputy Mayor Marcus Allen out of concern that his work with prominent lobbyists posed a potential conflict. Allen resigned from the Mayor’s Office earlier this year to open his own consulting firm and to partner with two prominent lobbyists as public affairs consultants. Last week, Chick and Allen defended his one-year consulting gig, saying they had discussed how to prevent any ethical conflicts or undue influence by Allen’s clients or his partners. However, after talking to colleagues, Chick said Monday, she and Allen realized the contract should not go forward. “In our enthusiasm to put his expert abilities to work again for the city of Los Angeles, we lost sight of how this contract would be perceived,” Chick said in a statement. “I have always known that perception, is in fact, reality. Maintaining the public’s trust will always be of the utmost importance to me.” Allen, who was Chick’s chief deputy from 2001 to 2005, would have helped her develop and review audits, policies and reports.
