Manchester United 4-1 Burton Albion: Red Devils stars rated and slated

first_img Jesse Lingard – 7 – Made a decisive touch in the run up to Rashford’s opening goal, then saw his ow deflected shot fly into the back of the net. A typically hard-working performance from the winger. Chris Smalling – 7 – Assured enough in a performance where he was rarely troubled by Burton. Still unlikely to replace either Phil Jones or Eric Bailly as United’s first-choice central defensive partnership. Substitute: Scott McTominay – 5 – Hardly got into the game when introduced. Substitute: Luke Shaw – 6 – Got up the pitch well when introduced, and showed off his athleticism against a flagging Burton defence. Didn’t have much to do in a defensive capacity. Matteo Darmian – 6 – The only real weak link in United’s team, with a shaky display at the back. Was culpable for Burton’s biggest chance of the night, after being beaten on the right flank far too easily. Daley Blind – 6 – Was put under little pressure with the majority of Burton’s attacks coming down United’s right flank. Fulfilled every job required of him when tested. 14 14 Michael Carrick – 8 – Kept United ticking over in the centre of midfield. He recycled the ball extremely well and made sure he never wasted a pass. A display that showed his experience. Sergio Romero – 6 – click the right arrow to see the rest of the Man United player ratings – Claimed the ball well in the air on a few occasions, and got down well to make a fine stop from close range. Juan Mata – 8 – Central to all United’s attacking play, Mata dictated attack after attack. Burton unwisely offered him time on the ball, and Mata showed off his talents time and time again. 14 14 14 14 14 14 14 14 14 Anthony Martial – 9 – He terrorised the Burton defence every time he got the ball. Displayed his technical skill with a series of breathtaking runs in the final third. His goal was well deserved. Ander Herrera – 8 – Made the most of a rare start this season by putting in a top class performance. He was all over the pitch, winning the ball and driving play forward. Burton could never settle with Herrera pressing whoever had possession. 14 Manchester United made light work of Burton Albion on Wednesday night, easing their way through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.Marcus Rashford had put the Red Devils two goals up inside the first 20 minutes, with Jesse Lingard adding a third with a deflected strike before half-time.United took their foot off the gas in the second period, but Anthony Martial still managed to breach Burton’s defence to make it 4-0 on the hour.In the dying stages, Lloyd Dyer scored a consolation goal for the Brewers, but Jose Mourinho’s side were rarely troubled at Old Trafford. So, how did Mourinho’s men perform? He scored the opening goal with a close-range finish, then doubled the lead with an excellent long-range shot. A livewire all through the night. Victor Lindelof – 6 – Still does not appear that assured in the heart of United’s defence. He is fine in possession, but looks panicked when opponents approach him at pace. 14 Substitute: Joel Pereira – 3 – Had to make only one save and failed to do that, dropping the ball in the area and allowing Lloyd Dyer to score Burton’s goal.last_img read more
