Both teams scored four runs in the first two innings. But in the top of the fourth, Avery Rusk singled an 0-2 count bringing in a run and the dam burst. Wellington would score four runs and break the game open. Wellington would go on to score two in the top of the fifth and then five runs to win by run rule.Wellington racked up 14 hits with Brooke McCorkle, Jacelyn Buck, Delaney Parkey and Lexi Clift all got multiple hits. McCorkle was 4 of 5 at bats.Toeing the rubber, McCorkle would allow nine hits, and five runs over six innings, striking out three and walking one.In the second game, it became batting practice for the Crusaders as Wellington had 18 hits to McPherson’s one in four innings of play.Annika DeJarnett had an outstanding day in the pitching circle, allowing one hit, striking out two and walking two.Buck would accumulate four singles in the rout. McCorkle got a home run in the fourth.Wellington led 5-0 after one inning, and 12-0 in the second. The Crusaders would score eight in the fourth to clinch victory.The Crusaders have one more doubleheader before regional competition. The game was tied at 3 when Cade Fairbanks grounded out, scoring the winning run.Wellington scored the first run in the top of the second off a Jack Nuss double. He was 3-for-3 for the day. The Crusaders led 3-0 in the top of the fourth when Goddard scored a run in the bottom half and two more in the fifth to tie the game.Cade Phelps earned the win as a reliever. In 2 1/2 innings pitched he allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two. Fairbanks in 4.2 innings pitched allowed one hit, walked four and struck out one. Wellington out-hit the Lions 8-3. Both teams committed three errors in the game.Earlier in the day, Wellington fell to McPherson 8-3. The Bullpups opened the game with a bang when Gabe Hoover hit on a Honestee home run to take a 3-0 lead. The Crusaders could never recover.Wellington never scored until the top of the seventh with three runs thanks to a DeAndre Washington 2RBI triple.Wellington hosts El Dorado Thursday to wrap up the regular season.Follow us on Facebook.Follow us on Twitter. by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington teams don’t usually voyage up north for sports. But the WHS baseball and softball teams were in McPherson to play doubleheaders.It turned out to be a pretty good trip. The Wellington girls swept McPherson while the boys split its triangular – beating Goddard and losing to McPherson.In the girls games, Wellington broke a four-game losing streak and improved to 8-10 by trouncing McPherson 15-5 and 20-1. In the boys game, Wellington would beat Goddard 4-3 and after losing to McPherson 8-3. The Crusader boys are 10-8 for the year.last_img read more
