Jamaicans Must Agree on Common Set of Values – Minister Thwaites

first_imgFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail During the course of the academic year, the Ministry of Education plans to develop and expose children to material that will lead them towards behaviour change and basic and broadly acceptable values.Portfolio Minister, Rev. the Hon. Ronald Thwaites, said the move comes against the background of what appears to be a “national ambivalence about values within the society” where “some of the certainties of the past are no longer accepted”. He stated that as a nation “we need to consensually agree on the values and attitudes that we are willing to accept as a people”.The Minister was addressing the opening ceremony of the Jamaica Independent Schools Association Principals’ Conference 2013, on Wednesday, April 24, at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort and Spa in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.Mentioning the recent withdrawal of printed material from the Health and Family Life Education curriculum, Rev. Thwaites said the Government’s position on the matter is very clear.“Our notion of healthy family life is the relationship between a man and a woman, with tolerance and compassion for those who have adopted a different lifestyle, but we are certainly not going to direct people in terms of something that we do not consider normal,” he stated. The Education Minister noted that the criticisms received in relation to that issue have caused queries from some people as to what should be accepted with regards to good social values. He insisted that there are some things that Jamaicans have to be clear about as it relates to values.Rev. Thwaites argued that simplicity in lifestyle, respect for each other, faithfulness and solidarity “are a few of the basic things that are useful in terms of building a society and making individuals happy”.He appealed for the help of the independent schools in building good social values and fostering behaviour change.By Bryan Miller, JIS Reporter Jamaicans Must Agree on Common Set of Values – Minister Thwaites EducationApril 29, 2013 RelatedSeven Primary Schools in East Kingston Get Tablet Computers Advertisementscenter_img RelatedJamaicans Must Agree on Common Set of Values – Minister Thwaites RelatedJamaicans Must Agree on Common Set of Values – Minister Thwaiteslast_img read more

CFO Focus: Institutional Asset Management

first_img continue reading » CUs can use non-insurance based, marked-to-market investments to offset qualifying employee benefit expenses.by. Kraig KlinkhammerCredit unions, just like any other business these days, are faced with increasing costs related to employee benefit plans, particularly welfare benefits. The desire for credit unions to utilize NCUA §701.19, “Benefits for employees of credit unions,” to broaden diversification among investible assets and achieve attractive risk-adjusted returns is on the rise. Institutional life insurance, which has contractual guarantees to protect against volatility of cash values (e.g., guaranteed minimum crediting rates), has been a popular investment over the past several years, but what about other alternatives?Securities products, such as mutual and exchange-traded funds, are abundant and can be a valuable contribution to a diversified portfolio, but many credit unions have difficulty with the due diligence, implementation and ongoing administration of this type of investment program. Common concerns include:where to begin;how to evaluate and choose proper levels of risk; andhow to manage risk going forward. The following discussion is focused specifically on establishing an institutional asset management program that uses non-insurance based, marked-to-market investments to offset qualifying employee benefit expenses, but does not contemplate specific investments, asset classes or allocations to use. Importantly, investment selection should be based on a CU’s specific situation. As such, recommendations on particular investments can only be made after an analysis of the goals and objectives of the program. Manchester United in ‘pole position’ for signing – Won’t give up,…

first_imgThe Italian media will not give up linking Manchester United with a move for Kalidou Koulibaly. Perhaps they can be forgiven for the never ending stories, because they’ve been encouraged by Napoli to run them. Aurelio De Laurentiis went on record to say he’d refused an offer of around €100m last summer, and it was clear that off record the club named was Manchester United. With Napoli needing sales to fund the purchases they plan to make this summer, talks of exits has increased again, which inevitably leads to more claims around Koulibaly moving to Old Trafford. This weekend, La Repubblica reported Manchester United are in ‘pole position’ to sign the defender this summer. They report his exit is more than simply an idea, presenting a transfer, somewhere at least, as likely. The Premier League seems the ‘obligatory destination’ for the Napoli player, and it’s stated talks between Napoli and United didn’t end, but were instead ‘postponed for twelve months’.Napoli want €90m, which feels wholly unrealistic for a defender who turns 29 years of age in June and who hasn’t had a great season so far.Despite the claims, there’s every chance United’s name is being used.by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksTrending TodayForge of Empires – Free Online GameThe Most Addictive Game of the Year 2019Forge of Empires – Free Online GameUndo聽多多 Hearmore.asia1969年前出生的香港居民現可免費試戴頂尖的歐洲助聽器聽多多 Hearmore.asiaUndoHero WarsGetting this Treasure is impossible! Kingston blow for Ghana

first_imgScottish side Hearts have hinted that Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston is likely to be unavailable for the Black Stars two World Cup qualifiers in two weeks’ time.Kingston will miss Hearts’ match against Dundee United Sunday because of a recurrence of his hamstring trouble. And he is not expected to be back for the final game of the season against Celtic either. The Ghanaian midfielder had only recently been passed fit after undergoing treatment in Germany, but pulled up in the first half of his club’s goalless draw with Aberdeen on Tuesday night.“I can’t understand it,” Csaba Laszlo, the Hearts manager said.“Larry is out for ten weeks, and then he’s OK, but now he has the same problem. “I’m sorry for Larry. He’s a really good football player and if he’s fit he can help any football team.”Even though no tests have been done so far, there are fears that he could stay out as long as he did when he got injury the last time.He was out for nearly three months that kept him out of the World Cup qualifier against Benin in April and he is likely to miss the two matches against Mali and Sudan.Ghana are keen on getting a result in both matches to boost their chances of qualifying for the World Cup and Kingston is a key player for the Black Stars.Source: Ghanasoccernetlast_img read more
