first_img By Kim Tae Hong – 2011.03.02 3:51pm There are signs that North Korea is running into serious difficulties with its corn harvest AvatarKim Tae Hong North Korea tries to accelerate building of walls and fences along border with China News As expected, President Lee Myung Bak used yesterday’s March 1st Independence Movement Day speech to reaffirm that South Korea is ready and waiting to talk to North Korea, saying, “We are prepared to hold a dialogue with North Korea at any time and with an open heart.”“This very moment is the best time to open up a new future for the Korean Peninsula,” he added.President Lee went on, “North Korea must immediately take the road of reconciliation and cooperation, through dialogue instead of nuclear weapons and missiles, and by acting to take responsibility for its armed provocations.”Calling to mind the reason for yesterday’s national holiday, nationwide protests against Japanese rule that began in Seoul on March 1st, 1919, President Lee went on, “Peaceful reunification means completing the national independence and self-respect which our forefathers sincerely longed for 92 years ago.”“Becoming one nation and becoming a reunified Korean Peninsula are of course at the core of Northeast Asian peace but also of global peace, and can become a new intersection of prosperity connecting continents and oceans, east and west, south and north.”“Living well together, a warm society, a strong country, a first-class developed country; these are our dreams,” he concluded.President Lee’s words on North Korea appeared strikingly similar to those he offered during this year’s New Year’s speech, emphasizing once again that if North Korea comes to the negotiating table with sincerity then it will be immediately possible to restart North-South dialogue.
