Tazlina brought back into service to provide more Southeast Alaska ferry sailings

first_imgJuneau | Southeast | State Government | TransportationTazlina brought back into service to provide more Southeast Alaska ferry sailingsNovember 15, 2019 by Henry Leasia, KHNS – Haines Share:The MV Tazlina ties up in Haines during its maiden voyage on May 7, 2019. (Photo by Jacob Resneck/CoastAlaska)The Alaska Marine Highway System restored ferry service Friday to some of the communities that had service slashed earlier this month. The ferry Tazlina will be brought back online to make up for previously canceled sailings.Earlier this month, AMHS pulled two ferries, the Aurora and the LeConte, out of service. Both ships need extensive repairs. This severely reduced winter ferry trips to Haines, Skagway and Hoonah. The communities of Tenakee Springs, Pelican, Gustavus and Angoon lost winter ferry service altogether.According to AMHS spokesperson Sam Dapcevich, the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has been looking for ways to increase service to the affected communities since then.“Alaska Marine Highway System decided to explore other alternatives, and I know there was quite a bit of discussion and collaboration with the unions so we could come up with a way to make it happen,” Dapcevich said. The Tazlina was scheduled to have new side doors installed this winter, but the contract for that work was not finalized. Instead the ship will provide service between Juneau and the communities of Haines, Skagway, Hoonah and Gustavus. The first sailing is scheduled for Nov. 21.Dapcevich said AMHS hopes the ship can sail to Angoon, but it is unclear if that will be possible.“We’re working on resolving an issue with the dock in Angoon. If we can get that issue resolved, then we will also service Angoon,” Dapcevich said. The Tazlina is not compatible with the ferry docks in Tenakee Springs and Pelican. AMHS does not plan to provide any ferry service to those communities this winter. The winter sailing schedule for the Tazlina is available online at Alaska ferry cancellations strand hundreds of people, vehiclesShare this story:last_img read more

News / Container terminal sector experiencing change with a new breed of operator

first_img A new breed of international container terminal operators has emerged over the past few years to challenge established companies which have traditionally dominated the sector.Localised players, such as ICTSI, SSA Marine, Eurogate and HHLA, have always had particular strengths in certain areas, but for almost a decade the container terminal operating industry’s four main global players have been ever-present in bidding for new concessions and privatisation opportunities – Hutchison, PSA, DP World and APM Terminals. Now however, according to the latest Global Terminal Operators Annual review released by Drewry, two new entrants have been added to the list of global terminal operators this year – France-based Bolloré and China Merchants Holdings International (CMHI).Drewry’s director of ports, Neil Davidson, described CMHI as “a significant new entrant this year”, calculating that after its 49% acquisition of the CMA CGM’s Terminal Link subsidiary, the company now has a 3.6% market share of the global container terminal industry. In contrast, the largest box port operator in terms of volumes remains Singapore’s PSA, which has an 8% global market share, and last year handled 61.8m teu, around half of which was at its flagship Singapore transhipment hub.In terms of market share it is followed by Hutchison with 7%, APM Terminals with 5.5% and DP World with 5.1%.He added that APMT and DP World had the most developed geographical spread of the four main operators.“The strategy of terminal operators varies from company to company – all the pure stevedores and hybrid carrier/operator companies remain active, mainly in terms of greenfield and brownfield expansion, but also because of a degree of acquisitions,” Mr Davidson said.He added that at the same time, investments by shipping lines in dedicated facilities had ground to a halt, with several looking to offload minority stakes in their terminals to financial investors.Nonetheless, the sector has remained fantastically profitable, with terminal operators maintaining an EBITDA margin of 20-45%, depending on “the level of risk in each operator’s portfolio”, which operators maintained even in 2009 when the financial crisis decimated volumes. In addition, merger and acquisition activity has intensified as financial investors have looked to re-enter the sector, while emerging operators, particularly CMHI, have sought to expand their networks.“CMHI has aggressive expansion intentions and further acquisitions seem particularly likely,” he said.“At the same time, regional players such as Gulftainer and Yilport will be contending for global container terminal operator status soon,” he added.Drewry has forecast that global container terminal volumes will reach 840m teu by 2018, with an average growth rate per year of 5.6%, and this would increase terminal utilisation from the 67% seen in 2013 to a near-critical 75% by 2018.Meanwhile, the impact carriers grouping themselves into four major alliances will also be far-reaching, “because of the concentration of volumes that that brings and the logical desire of the alliance members to bring the volumes together in one terminal”.He said currently volumes are often spread across different terminals in one port, which requires either inter-terminal transfers or separate calls at different terminals in one port – and this is “creating a lot of pressure for concentration of capacity in ports”.Mr Davidson continued: “One of the big issues is that is that capacity is fragmented for historical reasons in many ports – so that both physically and in terms of ownership capacity is often scattered around, and bringing that together in a fewer number of larger terminals in one port is difficult because it is a significant expense – but that’s the nature of demand, which is also tied in with the introduction of bigger ships, and begs the question of who is going to pay.” By Gavin van Marle 09/12/2014last_img read more

The top two Tier 1 teams head for the semi finals and the bottom two go qualify for the quarter finals. The Tier 2 and Tier 3 teams then play each other for positions in the Round 1 and Round 2 stage. After wins over Kildare, Westmeath and Antrim, Laois finished top of Tier 2 and will play in Tier 1 next year. This meant they went straight into Round 2 of the Leinster championship.Fixtures:Round 1: Laois 2-21 Westmeath 0-7Round 2: Kildare 2-10 Laois 1-14Round 3: Antrim 0-14 Laois 6-20Knock Out Stages (Round 1) – May 18A. They began away to Wexford and put in a great performance but went down by 1-21 to 0-18 in the end. Next up was a home clash with eventual Leinster champions Dublin who won by 2-21 to 0-7. Laois’s final group game was against Kilkenny where they also lost by 1-26 to 1-12. However, all Tier 1 teams qualified for the Leinster quarter finals and Laois now squared up against Offaly who topped Tier 2.But Laois would go down in that game by 2-19 to 1-14 to end the 2018 campaign without a victory.Laois have begun their 2019 campaign well with a comfortable 2-21 to 0-7 win over Westmeath in O’Moore Park.It was a much tighter and there was much more uncertainty as  to whether or not Laois will pull out a win against Kildare last weekend. They narrowly pulled off a point victory against the home side to stay in the top spot of tier 2.And Laois completed the Tier by thrashing Antrim. What have Westmeath been like at minor level?Westmeath have never reached a Leinster minor final. They began their campaign with big beatings from Laois and Kildare but a win over Antrim left them third in Tier 2.That set up a Round 1 clash with Carlow where a last minute Evan Scally point put them through to face Laois again.SEE ALSO – LISTEN: Our GAA Podcast returns as we look ahead to football championship opener Kelly and Farrell lead the way as St Joseph’s claim 2020 U-15 glory Previous articleDeaths in Laois – Friday, May 23, 2019Next articleRange of options available in Anti Wrinkle and Filler Clinic in Portlaoise Alan HartnettStradbally native Alan Hartnett is a graduate of Knockbeg College who has worked in the local and national media since 2008. 20 North Korean restaurants overseas close down in the wake of…

first_img Entire border patrol unit in North Hamgyong Province placed into quarantine following “paratyphoid” outbreak SHARE Facebook Twitter News According to South Korea’s NationalIntelligence Service [NIS], at least 20 overseas restaurants operated by NorthKorea have either been shut down or gone out of business in the aftermath ofinternational sanctions implemented against the country..“These restaurants were struggling from anabrupt decline in customers, and we’ve seen 20 places in China, the UAE, andother countries close their doors temporarily or shut down completely, and thistrend is spreading elsewhere,” NIS Director Lee Byung Ho said at aparliamentary briefing on North Korean affairs, according to Saenuri Partylawmaker Lee Cheol Woo (who was in attendance). The NIS chief also reported that theparticipation of each country in the implementation of UN sanctions againstNorth Korea is proving effective. There have already been visible results inthe fields of shipping and tourism, and gradual effects are starting to show intrade and finance. He added that fishing and cargo vessels from North Korea aremore frequently being denied port entry, and ship registrations are beingcanceled. In addition, the NIS chief stated that thegroup of 13 North Korean employees at the Ryugyong Restaurant in Ningbo,Zhejiang Province who defected on the 7th of April were originally planning toflee with seven more workers, which would have put the total at 20. However, the remaining seven backed out at the last minute due to concerns aboutretribution toward their families. The NIS chief also dismissed Pyongyang’sallegations that the defection a mass kidnapping orchestrated by Seoul’s spyagency. Rep. Lee confirmed that the director told the meeting that the workerswere holding legal North Korean passports and left on their own will. Director Lee also explained why the NISchose to report the defection at an early stage, saying, “North Korea alreadyknew the defectors had gone to South Korea, and because it was a large groupand unusual in nature, we had no reason not to disclose it.” He added that itwas in no way an attempt to rally support for the ruling party ahead of thegeneral election. On the upcoming Party Congress in theNorth, the NIS chief said he believes it will end up being an internalfestivity and not much more. According to Rep. Lee, the NIS chiefconfirmed that North Korea did not invite any foreign delegates to the event, and the NIS believes this is due to the fact that there are no significanteconomic achievements to tout and that conditions are not conducive to publiclylaying out the country’s future vision.Earlier in the week, a senior official fromSeoul’s foreign ministry said, “North Korea does not seem to be interested ininviting a lot of foreign guests and throwing a huge celebration as it didduring the 6th Party Congress.” The official added that the ministry is notaware of any countries with delegates that are planning to attend, and the fewinvited have notified Seoul that they will not go. Regarding the likelihood of a fifth nucleartest, Rep. Lee said the spy chief stated that North Korea was believed to haveprepared for the fifth test while conducting the fourth, meaning that it isready to carry out another test upon orders from Kim Jong Un at any time. Capital markets results to help U.S. banks’ Q3 revenues: Fitch

High debt levels threaten banks’ strong results: Fitch U.S. action on climate benefits banks, asset managers: Moody’s During the third quarter, trading volume has likely remained soft, but strong debt issuance has boosted underwriting revenues significantly, it says. “Despite lingering global economic uncertainty, debt issuance volume has surged in response to contracting spreads over benchmark rates and very low absolute borrowing costs,” it notes. Apart from the recovery in debt issuance, Fitch says that the merger and acquisition business remains sluggish, and it expects continued weakness in equity underwriting. It also says that fixed income, currencies, and commodities (FICC) trading revenues will likely recover somewhat, as some easing in eurozone concerns has boosted trading volumes. Additionally, Fitch says it expects banks to benefit from easy comparisons with a dismal third-quarter 2011 trading environment. Looking to the fourth quarter, Fitch says it remains focused on the potential for global economic concerns — including events in the eurozone, the looming U.S. fiscal cliff, and slowing growth in Asia — to fuel uncertainty in the capital markets. Also, fourth-quarter results are generally affected by the holiday slowdown, it says. “As a result, volatility in large banks’ capital markets revenue results is likely to continue,” it concludes. However, it doesn’t expect the rebound to last. The rating agency says that capital market revenues at the big banks are on track to rebound from their weak showing in the second quarter, “when thin trading volume, an equity market sell-off, and poor execution on the Facebook IPO weighed on revenues.” Facebook LinkedIn Twitter read more

Banks no longer see fintechs as threats: PwC report

first_img James Langton Related news Canadian banks to focus on growth, spending and buybacks after strong second quarter Canada’s big banks are beginning to see financial technology (fintech) firms as potential partners rather than rivals as the banks seek innovation to help boost service, enhance efficiency, and cut costs, suggests a new report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC). “The [banks] don’t see fintech firms as unwelcome invaders, but as partners and collaborators — as sources of fresh thinking and creative technologies that can help elevate the customer experience and improve efficiency,” the PwC report says. “It’s a shift in attitude that’s changing how banks tackle many challenges.” The list of challenges facing the banking industry in the year ahead is a long one, ranging from shifts in technology to growing customer expectations and rising costs. In this environment, competition is also increasing, with fintech startups, established technology firms and others edging into the financial services sector whereas the banks are burdened with aging legacy systems that impair innovation. However, the PwC report says that “Canada’s banks are responding to these challenges with urgency, confidence and significant investment.” As a result, PwC predicts that in the year ahead, banks will continue to embrace fintechs and innovation, generally, as they seek to upgrade payments systems, improve client experiences, and automate compliance. This approach marks a departure for the big banks, the report indicates. “Historically, Canada’s banks have preferred to keep the development of new products and services in-house,” the report says. “Today, banks are increasingly likely to build on their internal efforts, teaming with external organizations to accelerate innovation by capitalizing on their partners’ unique capabilities and agility.” In addition to banks’ willingness to team up with fintechs, they’re also increasingly partnering with academics who are leading sources of research into cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and robotics, the report notes: “We’re seeing far more collaboration among banks, fintechs and governments to speed progress, mitigate risk and create an environment where banking innovation can flourish.” One of the central obstacles to all of this is developing interoperability and facilitating the future expansion of systems, the report notes: “The answer lies in open standards and open banking APIs. It will be essential for banks, fintechs and other stakeholders to agree to standards for APIs, data and integration patterns — a common ‘language’ or ‘lexicon’ to keep solutions compatible and mutually understandable.” To that end, various players will have to work together to establish common standards, and to allow for future adoption of emerging technologies, such as robotics, AI and blockchain, the report recommends: “Embracing common standards will ultimately serve as the foundation for further innovation and help banks provide the seamless, friction-free experience customers demand.” Photo copyright: bakhtiarzein/123RF Share this article and your comments with peers on social media center_img Keywords Banking industry,  FintechCompanies PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP Fed plays limited role in assessing climate risks for banks TD getting new head of private wealth, financial planning Facebook LinkedIn Twitterlast_img read more
